what software are u using? i looked for one and it was bogus
I use the SoundTower Prophet Rev 2 Editor software to do deep editing / sound design on my Rev 2 synth.
believe it or not... still not fixed till today :(
Fabulous demo! I’ll. be applying this way of working to My pro 3 sequencing. Thank you! 🖖
Detuning voices is done intentionally for sound. The other per-voice differences probably reflect units that need service. However this is an excellent marketing opportunity and I'm not surprised Behringer makes a mockery of a misinterpretation.
So, at present, no...scrap that. Sounds to me like the thing BEH should do in firmware Update is simply SCRAP the Atrophy implementation and replace it altogether. The bottom line of Atrophy is that it would be best to pick one Profile, run with that and NEVER TOUCH IT, ever again. This would keep all your patches from being raped on a routine basis. As is, you would need to keep a log: My preset U-24 uses Atrophy Profile #3. So, when I decide to play with U-25, which uses AT Profile 7, I need to remember to change AT Profile back to #3 after I've engaged preset U-24...for 24 to sound as I intended. Either that or ONLY EVER use AT PROFILE #3. Maybe there would be a few happy accidents... I wonder if a companion software could account for or FIX the matter: You save a U (user) patch, using AT Profile #1 and the companion softer immediately saves it paired with every possible AT Profile. I can't recall how many you said there are. 8? So, you make one patch and you get 7 more variations of it. By then, you likely can't remember what it was you were going to record...
Yeah, its not an ideal situation. Hopefully Behringer will address this with future firmware updates to remedy the situation / alter the atrophy implementation.
@@CreativeSpiral This was great for me, BECAUSE...I have always completely ignored my OBXA (Arturia) Plug in favor of the GForce OBIES and OPX-Pro V3. So, thanks to you, I"m using OBXA now. It's nice!
Thank you for this!
i would just like to say out loud how utterly awesome this is. And I am indeed going to buy this man's 'Mass and Motion' sound-set based on this.
In about 1969 or 70 I heard One is the loneliest number done on the moog it was one of the first. On the radio in Sacramento California my dad was a musician I ran into the living room to tell him about this new electronic electronical thing that could play music have you ever heard of the mood synthesizer dad no he hadn't well I had to tell him it's new it's all electronic. I loved those first old songs. I actually taped it off the radio but I'd like to know what album it was off of I bet there's more songs on the album I would like to hear.
My friend, you are clearly a genius!
Damn... I used to Sequence multiple synths a lot on the X years ago. I took a break off it for sometime. I forget now what firmware I was on.... I didn't update for years but this year I updated and now that I see this I'm wondering if I shouldn't have. There's not really anything I wanted in the Newer Updates. I was fine with how it was before, but just wanted the midi to be tighter/better, and also more sample capabilities. Maybe like an actually decent Reverb or something. I won't pay for non of there plug-ins or whatever... I just use this thing as a Sequencer/Sampler and that's more or less it. Have they made any progress with this or just done the Akai thing and continued to ignore? They probably too busy designing more plug-ins we all don't really need/want.
Just bought the 15 Ep patch set, thank you so much and what a deal at 10 bucks. You really saved me, I was struggeling to get a decent Ep sound, gave up and was thinking I needed to get another board like a MODX for basic pianos. Love the sounds love them love them love them, thank you thank you thank you. Rich
Hey Rich - glad you're liking the EP patches!! Cheers, Jason
Just now coming across this video when looking for some info on my Rev2 but after recently acquiring and subsequently restoring and calibrating a Jupiter 4 this makes so much sense. Especially when you go into the resonances and how the calibration on the Jupiter was almost a spot on representation doing each voice card. I think a light bulb clicked on after seeing this and what you are doing. Going to have to go and try some of this soon. Great explanation and information!
I had to sub mate, as I really enjoyed this tutorial! I got mine June last year and have hardly done anything with it if I'm honest. I like to be able to follow a tutorial on how to do real interesting stuff like this by myself, as opposed to buying 'ready made patches' in which you don't learn much at all. I've a Wavestate & a PA600, but none of these would've been possible had a boy racer not wrecked my car 2 years ago. So I walk to work instead and bought these keyboards.
Thanks for going into this! Great info.
Is this per voice variance in older synths a symptom of component degradation?
Component degradation is part of the cause for variances over time, but even with new circuitry (from 1970s/80s), there was natural variances in the electrical performance of resistors, capacitors, ICs, etc... also, keeping multiple voices in tune and matched over multiple octaves is often tough... so the experience and focus of the technician who last performed calibration would be a key factor as well... and finally, the operating temperature of the synth circuitry can have a significant effect on the performance/calibration of oscillators/filter/etc. So, yeah, its multiple factors. In todays modern synths, the circuitry is generally better matched, with closer electrical tolerances -- and modern auto-tuning algorithms have become very advanced, sometimes with temperature calibrated indexes stored at every degree of Celsius difference (like in Sequential's synths).
Hey man, will there ever be a Volume 3 :)? Your patches are sublime man. The more closely i listen to each individual patch, the more impressed i am. As if there is alot of vintage character hidden if you listen closely. Anyway, i obviously subbed, like 2 weeks ago now i think.
Thanks! I may do another set at some point. Rev 2 is such a versatile/deep synth.
@@CreativeSpiral it sure is! I borrowed one as i had a Jupiter X in repair, i immediatly fell in love with the Rev2 and decided to keep it. Ill be closely monitoring your channel. Your playlist on the VCM is really helpful to. Keep up the good work👍!
Seen many videos of people playing this cool synth, but very few of them add any drums. Thanks for confirming that it's also awesome with drums!
You must be smitten. That update is exactly what you've been trying to build on sequentials for years, ha!
Lovely video! Helped me alot! Thanks man <3
Glad you found it helpful!
This video was very educational. Thank you very much!
Glad you found it useful! Cheers!
Easy on the vibrato.
At 5:30 regarding UBX: it will have discrete VCOs and the true 2-pole OTA-based SEM filters. There will be additional 4-pole filter modes as well, but those will use a different circuit. Note: in the UBX there will be no CEM chips of any kind, even though a vintage OB-X used CEM3310 EGs. Not even the OB-X8 does this anymore as software transient generators have long since taken over.
Awesome.. and so flexible. Any regrets getting the standard edition over the SE?
Thanks. Yeah, amazing synth. I do sometimes lust for the SE, for the nice wood side panels / look.
Really cool and glad I found your channel! I'm waiting for my Pro-3. Hopefully the end of the week so trying to get ahead.
Thanks and congrats! Yeah, I've got a decent amount of content for the Pro 3 on my YT channel. Also, some more resources, articles and free patches on PresetPatch: www.presetpatch.com/synth/sequential-pro-3
@CreativeSpiral Oh wow smashing! Thank you so much for such great resources. 👍😎💫
Youre a legend for coming up with the modern "vintage mode" techniques! What are your thoughts on the TEO-5? Personally i preordered immediately and dropped the thought of rebuying an ob6 or saving up for an x8 as i only really care about the SEM filter + the modulation options and oscillators sound crazy
Thanks! :) I'm excited about the TEO-5... pre-ordered it! Agree about the SEM filter sound. It's really the gem of Oberheim synth past.
Thank you for making this downloadable!
Enjoy!
Great video and I'm in awe of your great reactive lighting and robotic set up... really cool indeed! 👌🙏💅
Awesome video. Can the modeling be put as a setting that is there anytime we want to create a patch from scratch? Thanks! I’m in the market for a polysynth and this might be my choice.
Thanks. There's no way to overwrite the INIT patch... but you can download the template patches I've created, and just dial them up when you want to create a new patch, then just save it to a different slot, so you don't overwrite the template. I've got lots of free VCM template patches for Prophet Rev2 and other synths here: www.PresetPatch.com/user/creativespiral
@@CreativeSpiral thanks a lot for your reply, I think I will get my Rev2 on Sunday and I will definitely come back to you, thanks man!
Is it possible to change OSC1 frequency by semitones, or is it stuck to changing only using octaves ?
So its a bit of a lemon. From all the videos I have seen the filter at full resonance doesn't sound like the classic SEM. Is that just because of the sound designer or the actual hardware?
Yeah.. It only has the Curtis based filter.. not the SEM unfortunately… as I mentioned in video, would have been nice if they just included both option, like the Oberheim OBX8… since that other filter is generally the most desired.
@@CreativeSpiral thanks for clearing that out. For some reason I assumed this had the SEM filter.
Best demo of practical application of the sequencer. ❤
I already loved my Rev 2 but I'm realizing there's a lot more to love. Thank you so much for sharing the benefits of all your hard work, what a service! This might be a dumb question, I've only had the synth a few months, but is the voice modeling possible without the editor? I ask because I have the Rev 2 in a separate room from the work station as a simple "turn it on and get creative" instrument. Many thanks and one new sub.
Yes, you can set this up without the editor... A while back I wrote up some instructions here: forum.sequential.com/index.php?topic=3450.0 Also, you can download my free patch templates here: www.presetpatch.com/user/creativespiral (if you filter for "VCM" you'll see all the voice modeling templates and patches.
❤
A well researched factual video, thanks for that. The good news in this context is that third-party manufacturers can now sell patch sheets on which the Atrophy settings matching the patch created can be noted. The last sentence was, of course, not meant entirely seriously. 😉
It seems you are saying that if I build a patch using Atrophy #1 and save it, then switch the machine to a different atrophy, then revert back to Atrophy 1 that your patch will then sound different and need to be tweaked again? I will have to test mine... Is that your claim? Thanks much for your insights into these attributes.
I was saying if you design a bunch of sounds on Atrophy #1, and then create a new sound and decide it would sound better with some adjustments to the vintage character, and you alter the settings in Atrophy #1, then all your patches you previously designed to use Atrophy #1 will sound different.... since Atrophy settings are not saved on a per-patch basis. If you don't alter the atrophy settings in a given profile, the settings will stay the same... however, since the voice variances are based on randomness / lfo drift, you're always playing a bit of roulette with the exact character you get. (you may get random moments of more extreme dissonance, when random lfo/drift is 180 degrees out of phase for oscillators in a given voice, or between voices.)
I traded my excellent condition 40 year OB8 for the Oberheim/Sequential OB-X8. I was worried that it might need a trip to the shop soon. Then, I sold the OB-X8, pocketed a few grand, and then got this Behringer. Out of the box, the Behringer patches need a lot of work/tweaks to sound as good as the previous two I mentioned. I probably should have kept the OB-X8, as it if VERY fat and has a little more sizzle. However, some of the demos assure me I can tweak the Behr to sound like I want it to....
Wow … Remind me why I’m bothering with hardware synths, again … ?! 😬 Where’s this method going to be in 5 years? Or even just 2?
Yeah, over the past four years there's been a lot of hardware and software developers who have implemented this type of voice modeling approach... including many very good VSTs. Here's a list of some of the synths have have proper voice modeling options: www.presetpatch.com/articles/hardware-and-vst-synths-with-vintage-voice-modeling Hardware synths will always have a place for the immediacy and user interface, but there's many digital or software synths that have great vintage style character now.
@@CreativeSpiral Thank you so much for this link! Did you see the leak about the new PolyBrute that’s coming (more voices and polyAT)? I remember you mentioned somewhere, you just wish it had more voices … Also, was I wrong about you using the 4-pole filter for your Rev 2 BR patch (it’s just that the 4-pole lights are lit in Soundtower), or was I wrong about the CS-80 filter being 2-pole (or something else)?! Thanks again! I didn’t take to the Polybrute’s (or Matrixbrute’s) sound, but your patches for the Polybrute sound fantastic - if I get one, it will be because of/to use your patches.
@@kierenmoore3236 Yeah, saw that video of the potential PolyBrute-12... that would be pretty cool. The PB is an amazing synth. I would definitely be interested in more voices on it. Regarding the Blade Runner sound... I've done designs of that sort of sound several times on Rev 2 and other synths... sometimes I have gone with 2-pole... sometimes 4-pole... depending on delay/reverb, a lot of that upper spectrum often gets filled.
@@CreativeSpiral Ah, I see - that makes sense. Trust your ears, ultimately … … A 12-voice Polybrute Noir would definitely pique my interest! Cheers! Be well, K
Jason, to your knowledge, have any if these recommendations been acted upon by Sequential? Have you ever heard from anyone at Sequential about your VCM research? They must have seen it discussed/referenced on the Sequential forum, if nowhere else! Cheers! PS - I assume these recommendations would apply equally to the ‘vintage algorithms’ in the OB6, Tri6, P5/10 & the OBX8, as well - do you know?! Perhaps your recommendations here have in fact been implemented in one or more of these (either upon release, for the later-released units, or via later updates?!).
Yeah, they're aware of it at Seq. I think the vintage mode implementation is similar on all their instruments, but there may be some slight variations.
You, Sir, are my synth programming hero.
😎
any thoughts on the pitch bender? I've never used this style so I'm not sure how it compares to a wheel or a roland style joystick for lead/solo lines
The flippers? Those are a vintage Oberheim thing, that they’ve carried forward.
Hi, I bought the sound pack last year, I've upgraded my Macbook and can't find my original order to download the patches again... how do I get access?
Shoot me an email with your name/email address you used (to jason@creativespiral.com), and I'll resend you the files.
Awesome video. Just had to click the time bar like 50 times to see you actually play a note.
I'll be uploading some more videos with sound examples soon... this was just a technical overview and my first impressions. Am still deciding if I'll do a whole soundset for this synth.
can these sounds be used in a moog subsequent 37?
Yeah, Subsequent 37 is what I designed them on.. they work on both synths.
Can i maybe ask you a few questions as a beginner hardware synth user about how to connect your solar 42 to lets say a mpc one and getting them synced ?
The MPC One (and other recent MPCs) have modular gate output jacks on the back of the unit... you could hook up a 1/8 inch modular patch cable (modular 1/8 Y cable) from one of those outputs, to a clock input / gate input on the Solar 42... like I hooked up to the 5-step sequencer from TR-8s in this video. Then, when you start/play a sequence on the MPC, it will output gate pulses in time with the BPM, and that will advance the sequencer.
Any plans on doing a bank for sale?
My guess is there's round robining at work. Meaning not all voices have the same fixed offsets, and order of voices changes. I.e. not always 1-2-3-4-5-etc. This worked with another multitimbral synth, set Mono, 1 vioce per MIDI channel. (Not the monster sound of 3rd wave, unfortunately, though a bigger sound neverthelesss.)
Sounds good did you sync to tr8 via gate out tr8 , 1/8 cable to gate in on the 42, ? It sounds locked pretty well any issues with sync ?
Thanks. Yeah, gate out from TR-8s is used in this video., going to the clock input on 5-Step sequencer on Solar 42. I have also experimented with using the assignable trigger outputs from TR-8s... with a 1/4 to 1/8 adapter... that's a good option if you want to assign a specific instrument track on the TR-8s to send trigger/gate for each note that is programmed into the pattern... ie: to get more complex rhythmic timings.
@@CreativeSpiral thx for confirming - I would have to sale the pro 3 to make room so mulling over !
